According to the International Tropical Timber Organization (ITTO) bulletin, in the first eight months of 2023, the UK imported 61000 cubic meters of tropical hardwood plywood from China, an increase of 57% compared to the same period last year. Compared to the significant decrease in imports of tropical hardwood products from China from the UK last year, this growth has also promoted the import of temperate hardwood products from China.
From January to August this year, the UK imported 39200 cubic meters of Indonesian plywood, a decrease of 10% compared to the same period last year. The UK imported 28500 cubic meters of plywood from Malaysia, a decrease of 31% compared to the same period last year. The UK’s imports of plywood from Thailand decreased by 62% to 3800 cubic meters. During the same period, the base of tropical hardwood plywood imported from Brazil was small, but the increase was significant (+115%, reaching 3800 cubic meters).
The import volume from Paraguay also increased by 13%, reaching 2000 cubic meters. ITTO stated that the combined impact of Brexit, supply shortages, and rising energy and other material costs on the European continent continues to affect the UK’s imports of tropical hardwood plywood from EU countries, with only 5000 cubic meters in the first eight months of this year, a decrease of 42% compared to the same period last year
