On April 12, 2023, the export volume of Brazilian furniture and pine tropical plywood has been declining for three consecutive months!
The recently released export data of Brazilian tropical sawn timber, plywood, and furniture shows a downward trend in both export quantity and export value. In particular, the export of Brazilian furniture has not reached the goal of reducing wood exports, developing domestic wood processing industry and increasing the export of wood furniture previously proposed by Brazil.
Overall, in February 2023, the export value of Brazilian wood products (excluding pulp and paper) decreased by 36% compared to the same period last year to $264.2 million. Previously, the export value reached $413.6 million in 2022.
In terms of tropical sawn timber exports. In February 2023, the number of tropical sawn timber exported by Brazil decreased by 22%, from 30800 cubic meters in February 2022 to 24000 cubic meters in February this year. In terms of value, the export value increased by 2.4% from $12.04 million to $12.7 million.
Among them, from February 2022 to February 2023, the export volume of pine sawn timber decreased from 252800 cubic meters to 215200 cubic meters, a decrease of 26%. And the export value decreased by 26% to $50.9 million.
As for the export of tropical plywood, the total export volume decreased from 5900 cubic meters in February 2022 to 4600 cubic meters, a decrease of 22%; The export amount decreased by 28% from 2.9 million US dollars to 2.1 million US dollars.
The trade volume of pine tropical plywood decreased significantly by 44% in February this year, from $91 million in February 2022 to $51.4 million.
In terms of Brazilian furniture exports, in November 2022, Brazilian furniture exports have shown a downward trend. In January 2023, Brazil’s furniture exports were only $45 million, a 25% decrease compared to the previous month. Becoming the third consecutive month of a decline in Brazilian furniture exports.
It is understood that the United States and Uruguay are still the main markets for Brazilian furniture. The export value to the United States reached 14.4 million US dollars, accounting for almost 32% of Brazil’s total furniture exports. Nevertheless, this number is still lower than in the past two years. The amount exported to Uruguay reached 4.3 million US dollars, accounting for 9.5% of its total furniture exports.
According to the Market Intelligence Institute (IMEI), the main reasons for the decline in Brazil’s timber and wood products exports are internal factors related to the economy, politics, industry business environment, and national trade. As well as external factors such as exchange rate fluctuations, tariff barriers, international competition, logistics, global supply chain forms, and international demand and economic situation in major import markets.
Previously, Brazil said that it would vigorously develop the domestic wood processing industry and furniture export industry. However, based on the export situation of Brazilian furniture in the first quarter of this year, increasing the export of furniture to the outside world still depends on improving the internal and external environment.
