According to monitoring data from the Industrial Development Planning Institute of the National Forestry and Grass Administration (Forestry Industry Planning and Design Institute) and the China Forestry Industry Association, in the first half of 2023, China’s plywood and fiberboard industries showed a decline in the number of enterprises and a contraction in total production capacity, while the particle board industry showed a decline in the number of enterprises and a rapid growth in total production capacity.
At the end of June 2023, there were over 9800 plywood product production enterprises nationwide, distributed in 28 provinces and cities, a decrease of nearly 1000 compared to the end of 2022. The total production capacity was about 205 million cubic meters per year, a further decrease of 1.4% compared to the end of 2022. The plywood industry is showing a dual decline in the number of enterprises and total production capacity.
In the first half of 2023, two fiberboard production lines (all continuous flat pressing lines) were built and put into operation nationwide, with an additional production capacity of 360000 cubic meters per year. At the end of June, 287 fiberboard production enterprises in China maintained 321 fiberboard production lines, distributed in 23 provinces and cities, with a total production capacity of 46.93 million cubic meters per year and a net reduction of 850000 cubic meters per year, a decrease of 1.8% from the end of 2022. Among them, there were 134 continuous flat pressing lines, with a total production capacity of 29.68 million cubic meters per year, accounting for 63.2% of the total production capacity. The fiberboard industry is showing a further downward trend in the number of enterprises, production lines, and total production capacity.
In the first half of 2023, 14 chipboard production lines (including 6 continuous flat pressing lines) were built and put into operation nationwide, with an additional production capacity of 2.91 million cubic meters per year. At the end of June, 290 chipboard production enterprises in China maintained 306 chipboard production lines, distributed in 22 provinces and regions, with a total production capacity of 43.75 million cubic meters per year and a net increase of 2.27 million cubic meters per year, an increase of 5.5% from the end of 2022. Among them, there were 98 continuous flat pressing lines, with a total production capacity of 26.25 million cubic meters per year, further increasing to 60.0% of the total production capacity. The particle board industry is showing a trend of further decline in the number of enterprises and production lines, while the total production capacity continues to rise. There are 53 chipboard production lines under construction nationwide, with a total production capacity of 17.64 million cubic meters per year. The risk of overheating investment in the chipboard industry has increased.
