Finishes for plywood provide a beautiful coat and create the warmth the material is known for. And that’s not all. Finishes also reinforce the durability and resistance of the panel. Discover the characteristics and benefits of the finishes available at Garnica and discover the best finish for your plywood project.
Wood offers a wide range of uses for interior construction. It is used in beams, wall structures, staircases, floors, roofs, furniture, doors, windows, moulds and many other applications. In some cases, it is used for interior construction and it is used to finish surfaces, provide aesthetic value and create the warm and inviting environment it is known for. Today’s range of finished plywood, however, is so diverse that you can also find options to create a cooler and more modern design as well.
Garnica’s interior plywood panels are manufactured from a wide range of quality woods, including maple. Maple is a great alternative to Russian birch, which is currently banned in the EU. Not only does maple boast a beautiful grain, it is also highly resistant and ideal for finishes such as varnish and lamination.
Plywood finishes serve to protect wood from undesirable situations (such as damp, scratching, the sun), accentuate aesthetics and enhance the beauty of the final product. Before making any decisions, it’s a good idea to get your head around the different wood treatments on offer. Here’s everything you need to know:
6 Plywood Finishes for Interiors
Varnish
Two-faced UV varnish enhances the beauty of the wood’s natural grain while also increasing the resistance of the surface.
This indoor wood treatment is featured in Reinforced Globulus Maple, which is a multipurpose high quality range for applications requiring strength and resistance. With maple faces and a poplar core, the line is not only strong, but beautiful with maple faces ranging in colour from cinnamon to chocolate brown.
Beyond its aesthetic and strength values, the Reinforced range provides another, important benefit: it is an alternative to Russian Birch. Given the current political situation in Russia, choosing a readily available, sustainably produced plywood panel has never been more important. When you choose Garnica’s Reinforced range, you can rest easy knowing that you’re making the right choice.
Laudio Deco is also available with a varnished finish that makes it even more beautiful. This European radiata pine-based decorative plywood is defined by its marked veins and characteristic pine edges, making it the perfect choice for furniture and home decoration.
The selected faces are of premium quality while the radiata pine promises excellent properties such as durability, uniformity and dimensional stability. This European pine is obtained from sustainable plantations located 50km from our plant in Llodio and is recognised by quality and sustainability certifications (RFSC, PEFC).
High-Pressure Lamination
Looking to protect interior wood? Some finishes have been designed to reinforce resistance to impact and scratching. Laminate is a case in point. This finish is featured in the Ultralight Poplar HPL, an ultra-light, highly energy-efficient sandwich panel. Ultralight Poplar HPL offers thermic insulation and exceptional acoustics, thanks to its XPS foam core.
Primed
Prime is a plywood finish that provides the panel with a first coat of paint. At Garnica, we softly sand the panel to give it an exceptionally smooth and uniform surface, which is ready for a final lick of paint. This will help you save time and money later on.
This finish is found in Duraprime, which has a treatment that makes it exceptionally resistant and ideal for exterior use. Its exceptionally uniform, primed surface has great colour retention and resistance to impact and scratching in addition to an anti-mould technology that ensures minimal swelling and prevents delamination.
If you’re looking to create furniture for the inside of your home, Performance Ultra-smooth plywood is the panel for you. Boasting a premium poplar core, it is a high-quality, light-weight panel. The primed surface is smooth, resistant and designed to be finished with a touch of colour.
Painted
Painted is a step up from prime. While primed panels have been provided with the first coat of paint, painted plywood is exactly as it states: painted with the final coat and ready to be installed. Garnica provides finished plywood that has been painted white or grey that are ready-to-use and require no further treatment.
Groove and Tongue & Groove
Last but by no means least are tongue and groove. Grooving is created on the longitudinal side of the U or W panel type (smooth back face) to enhance the beauty of the pine.
Tongue-and-groove is a groove finish available on 2 or 4 edges which enables panels to be joined together. At Garnica we offer both options to make it easy for you to cover your floors and walls. Tongue & groove provides a smooth, solid and homogeneous surface that is able to hold a heavy load.
We hope we’ve cleared up the differences between these different finishes and their importance to the final result in terms of both aesthetics and durability. Reach out to Garnica if you’d like more information or would like to purchase our panels. We’d be delighted to help.
